Background: The programme on this disc forms the precursor to John Eliot Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage of 2000, which aimed to perform all of Bach's sacred cantatas in churches around Europe and in New York. Just before beginning his cantata performances, he performed the Christmas Oratorio in a beautiful church in Weimar, over two days.
