Background: This recording of Mahler's Second Symphony is conducted by Kazushi Ono, who succeeded Antonio Pappano as Music Director of La Monnaie in Brussels to high critical acclaim. Ono has an unusually extensive repertoire and he has a particular interest in contemporary composers. He gave the world première of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Silent Cities and the Japanese premières of Werner Henze's 8th and 9th symphonies and he conducted 'Luci Mie Traditrici' by Salvatore Sciarrino with La Monnaie in both Brussels and at the Lincoln Center, New York. 'Ono secured superlative ensemble virtues and dramatic pacing from the players. He has the gift of bringing out the best of an orchestra.' The Boston Globe |
