Background: Throughout the age of the Baroque, the trumpet was associated, as was no other instrument, with scenes of pomp and circumstance: its clangour symbolised secular and spiritual power, and left its festive mark on ceremonial occasions of every kind. In an age that loved ostentation, the number of trumpeters employed by a court was a sign of power and wealth, with princes vying with one another to attract the finest virtuosos to their palaces and castles. Originally scored for oboe and violin, Vivaldi’s Concerto in B flat major is heard here in a later transcription for the trumpet. During his lifetime, George Philipp Telemann was almost more famous in Germany than his contemporaries Bach and Handel. |
