Background: The Marian Vespers is a reconstruction and is made up of individual movements composed by Pergolesi. Much of the music on the 2CDs has been lost or forgotten since it was composed. It follows the 18th century practice of contrafacta - music taken from one context (usually secular) with its lyrics replaced by sacred texts. The Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born in 1710 and died of tuberculosis at the age of 26 in a Franciscan monastery where he was cared for in his last months by the monks. In a highly creative life spanning less than ten years, he composed operas, oratorios, cantatas, short sacred music and some instrumental works. |
