Background: Joseph Canteloube is the best known composer devoted to the revival of French folksong. These Chants d'Auvergne are taken from five volumes that Canteloube published with orchestral arrangements between 1923 and 1930. Maurice Emmanuel's chansons complete the release. Canteloube collected songs from a living tradition and re-fashioned them for classical forces in elaborate and subtle arrangements. Maurice Emmanuel is another composer celebrated for his work toward the renewal of French music through folksong. |
