Background: William Christie leads Les Arts Florissants and an outstanding cast of soloists in the 1756 version of Rameau's Zoroastre. Zoroastre tells the story of a power struggle between the great Persian religious reformer Zoroastre and an ambitious sorcerer, Abramane. The work is a thinly disguised portrayal of the ideals of freemasonry. Some of the dances and the final chorus of the original 1749 production, which were cut by Rameau in the 1756 revision, have been recorded separately and are included as a bonus on the third CD. |
