Background: If contemporary music was his calling card, Pierre-Laurent Aimard also performed a much wider repertoire and in recent years. At his much awaited Carnegie Hall debut in Dec-2001, Aimard mixed works by Beethoven and Liszt with those of Ligeti and Messiean to critical acclaim. 'Mr Aimard brought wondrous colorings, incredible subtleties and poignantly cool expressiveness to Books 1 and 2 of Debussy's Images' New York Times. Pierre-Laurent Aimard first came to international attention as the phenomenal solo pianist in Pierre Boulez's Ensemble Contemporain. A key figure in the new music world, he collaborated frequently, not only with Boulez but also with Stockhausen, Ligeti, Kurtag and others. |
