Background: This 2 CD set presents the complete recordings made by the great tenor Joseph Schmidt for Ultraphon between 1929 and 1932. Although at 1.50m tall Schmidt was too short to be a leading man on the stage, his voice was known around the world through his radio work, several films and his recordings. Schmidt had a relatively short recording career of only eight years. He died at the age of 38 in 1942 of a heart attack in Switzerland, where he was a refugee in a labour camp. Experts in the field are of the opinion that the high point was his recordings for Utraphon/Telefunken. |
