Background: This CD celebrates the art of the best French string quartet of the 1930s, the Calvet Qt, an ensemble that not only set a high standard of playing and interpreation in its own time but was hugely influential on subsequent generations of musicians and did much to arrest the decline of the French school. The Calvet Qt's records were beautifully engineered by the Telefunken technicians and for the Schubert D minor they were allotted ten 79rpm sides rather than the normal eight so they could be reasonably expansive. They still had to stop every few minutes and make a second 'take' of the segment they had just played, before going on to the next segement, but a least they could give a full representation of the music. |
