Background: EMI celebrates the 75th birthday of one of our most acclaimed and respected contemporary composers, Steve Reich. This album includes a world-premiere recording of a new scoring of Reich's ‘Six Pianos’, entitled ‘Piano Counterpoint’, arranged and performed by Vincent Corver, Pianist and Co-Founder of the Composer-Endorsed London Steve Reich Ensemble.

Scored for String Quartet and Tape, Different Trains is one of the most popular Steve Reich pieces ever written, winning a Grammy award in 1990 for best contemporary classical composition. Steve Reich granted Vincent Corver exclusive rights for the transcription of Six Pianos, to piano with electronic tape – to be called Piano Counterpoint. The world premiere Piano Counterpoint will be the first existing piece for piano solo with tape by Vincent Corver & Steve Reich, allowing pianists around the globe to perform Reich without the necessity of a second piano (eg Piano Phase) or larger group of musicians. According to Reich, the initial inspiration for Triple Quartet - for String Ensemble (written in 1998) came from the last movement of Bartók's Fourth Quartet. 'Its energy was my starting point,' he says. While working on the piece, he also heard the music of Alfred Schnittke for the first time, specifically his string quartets, which deeply affected his writing, as did Michael Gordon's Yo Shakespeare. Reich says, 'the piece became considerably more dissonant and expressionistic than expected,' as a result of these influences. The original perfomance edition of this work was for quartet and pre-recorded tape; here we hear it performed by three live string quartets.
