Background: First time on DVD for Karl Böhm's acclaimed 1969 performance of Fidelio in one of his rare appearances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. With superb singers as well as excellent actors like the glorious Gwyneth Jones in the title role, the expressive James King as Florestan, the massive Martti Talvela as Don Fernando and Gustav Neidlinger as the 'bad guy' Don Pizarro. This production by Gustav Sellner of Beethoven's only opera tells how Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named 'Fidelio', rescues her husband Florestan from death in a political prison. '… this performance is a musical magnificence' - Die Welt. |
