Background: Neil Shicoff in the role he was born to sing: Eléazar in Jacques Fromental Halévy's La Juive. La Juive is a fascinating grand opera by Fromental Halévy which after its premiere in Paris in 1835 was described by one contemporary as the 'eights wonder of the world'. For over a century this masterwork was performed by the world's major opera houses but completely disappeared from the stage after World War II. Only in 1999 the opera finally found its way back to the repertoire and proved hugely successful in Günter Krämer's production for the Vienna State Opera which was also shown in Tel Aviv and New York. |
