Background: An operatic event to celebrate the reopening of the Anna Amalia library. In 1773 Christoph Martin Wieland wrote the libretto for the opera Alceste. The same year saw this opera premiered in Weimar with music by Anton Schweitzer, a composer who is all but forgotten today. What is particularly special about this opera, patronised by Duchess Anna Amalia, is the description of it as 'the first opera in the German language', and it is this which has granted the Duchess an important chapter in music history. Let us hope that the performance in Weimar will provide the impetus to bring this once widely performed work back onto opera stages today. |
